A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness: review Put simply, A Monster Calls is the tale of Conor O'Malley, a 1. The monster - part scary giant, part wild yew tree - tells the boy three stories. These bewildering parables knock Conor off balance but he is not terrified of the monster because he already fears and anticipates something worse. He knows he is watching his beloved mother die. The drawings are part of the very fabric of the book, almost seeming to grow out of the page, like the tree monster himself. The appearance on the scene of Conor's father, who scarpered to America with a new wife when Connor was just seven, is handled deftly and wittily. The book has a razor sharp sadness as it cuts through to the sad and dismal days Conor has to endure at school - facing bullying from some children and stilted sympathy from teachers - while he waits and hopes for a miracle that will not come. In the end, Conor has to face his demons and admit he just wants it to be over. To stop having to think about it. But there is honesty and great beauty there too.
